Checking In

5 Mar

My oh my, it has been quite a while since i’ve popped on here to give an update! I have just one excuse for my extended absence: optometry school. Apparently, it’s not only incredibly difficult to keep up a healthy living blog while in professional school, it’s also incredibly difficult to keep up healthy living.

After a grueling last quarter, I managed to have a nice week-long tropical getaway to the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. I just got back this weekend… and though I do not miss the blood-thirsty mosquitos or the near-total lack of healthy eating possibilities (grocery stores sold half junk food, half canned food, a sprinkling of fresh produce– a shelf end, that is– and no fresh meat), I do miss this:

Postcard Perfect

beach time.

ahhhh.

and this:

our pool for the week.

beautiful.

and this:

upon the ancient battlements (actually circe 1770's)

view of English Harbor from Shirley Heights.

sunset in Antigua

and most of all this:

true love :)

But as is usually the case at the end of an international trip, I was really grateful to get home to my own bed and to a fridge stocked with all the lovely things Trader Joe’s has to offer.

fully stocked fridge!

Last quarter was quite depressing– these last few months I’ve been the most sedentary and the least healthy-minded that I’ve been in quite a while, which resulted in a small but noticeable amount of weight gain. To get myself back into shape, mentally and physically, I have set the following goals for the next month:

  • Walk or run every day. No time goals or speed goals, just lace up my shoes and MOVE. try and do this before class every day… which leads into the next goal.
  • Wake up earlier and go to sleep earlier. I was ridiculous last quarter with 2am bedtime and waking up 15min before class starts…
  • Clean up my eats and drinks. Avoid empty calories!
  • Drink more WATER! Dear lord have I been slacking here.
  • As part of the above, I’m cutting out meats and hard cheeses. Fish, eggs, and other dairy are all fair game, however.
  • Not food/exercise related: attend every class, pay attention and TAKE NOTES. no more skipping!

To help with my new healthy goals, I have canceled my Netflix membership (Netflix is where my motivation and good intentions go to die– I’ve wasted countless hours browsing and watching mindlessly). I’ve also installed my local library’s iPhone app so that I can check out and download free audiobooks, which I can then listen to while walking/running (now I take my entertainment on the road!). THIS is going to be the key to my exercise success.

Also, I’ve made another batch of my favorite cold-brewed iced coffee and a pitcher of cucumber-infused water to have nice healthy calorie-free beverages to enjoy at my convenience.

Hopefully all this will get me started off on the right foot as I begin the hardest quarter of optometry school!

Ciao for now,

Shaya

Quarter’s End

Hello, out there!!

It has been a LONG time since my last update!

Since you’ve heard from me, I have managed to complete the (seemingly) longest, definitely hardest quarter of optometry school thus far… it ended with 6 finals, the last of which I struggled through yesterday.

For a month and a half, I did not manage to take care of anything else in my life except for my schoolwork. This has resulted in multiple break-outs on my skin, a cough that has persisted for 3 weeks (and counting), and probable an elevated blood pressure.

I did, however, manage a lifestyle overhaul. At some point in all the craziness, I manage to lose about 4 hours of sleep one night reading the book ‘Wheat Belly’ by Dr. William Davis.

It was fascinating, and eye-opening, and apparently life-changing– for the past few weeks, minus a couple of small slip-ups, I’ve been maintaining
a wheat-free diet.

I will want to talk more about why I’ve made this change a little later (too much to post right now), so I’ll probably be back soon to do so.

As for right now, I’m just elated to be done, and ready to continue celebrating my birthday for the next week :)

Hiatus

24 Sep

Hi everyone! Hope you’ve had a wonderful week :)

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated.

The reason for this is I think my previous posting rate was a little too strenuous for me at this time in my life. I was getting really burnt out trying to juggle writing my blog, commenting on other blogs, and all the hours that have gone into keeping up this little thing up– with having to spend the hours I have working on school stuff.

Obviously, my priority is school– I love writing on here and being a part of this community, but getting good grades and getting in all the studying I need in order to do well is definitely more important to me in the long run. I just don’t have a schedule right now that’s conducive to very active blogging!

Also, I feel like the 2+ hours I was spending every day on blog stuff was taking time out of possible workouts. Instead of going out for a walk, I’d be busily writing up a post. Instead of going for a run, I was busy reading and commenting on a bazillion blogs.

And don’t worry, I’m still reading everyone’s blogs– I’ve just been lurking rather than commenting. :)

Meanwhile, I’ve decided to join my local 24/hr fitness– so that will be fun. Their fitness class schedule is awesome and includes spin, Zumba, and BODYPUMP (!!) which I’m totally excited for.

So now, I think I’m going to be investing a little more time into exercise every week, while occasionally updating my little bloggy with big events and fun stuff. I WILL try to comment more on my active reader’s blogs for sure.

ANYWHO! I’ve got a long weekend of studying ahead of me, but I did manage to bang out 3.5 miles this morning on a walk/run that was actually more run than walk today (yay!),

just to get myself a green juice and come back. I watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead yesterday on instant Netflix and it made me really NEED to get myself some fresh juice haha.

kale, spinach, carrot, pear, ginger, lime, spirulina :) like sweet/sour/spicy grass juice haha.

shweaty with a headband mark on the forehead. so seksi.

And because I just look so awful in the above photograph, let me show you what I looked like in clinic the other day, with a new shirt (!) and the new flats I wrote about in the Fashion post:

from Ann Taylor Loft. love the ruffles and the rosettes :)

shirt matches the shoes! these are just ok-- they kind of make my feet sweaty.

Ok, now I’ve redeemed myself from my sweaty picture haha.

Hope you have a good weekend! I’m just going to be glued to my notes until Wednesday.

Questions for you:

Is your schedule conducive to active blogging? How do you balance blogging with the other important commitments in your life?

Guess What I Got??

19 Sep

Hey friends!! Hope you’ve had a good Monday so far (as good as Mondays ever get, haha)!

Guess what I got today??

short, with soy milk :)

My VERY FIRST hot pumpkin spice latte of the season!!!!

It was glorious, though perhaps a bit too sweet. Think I’ll go with one pump of PS syrup next time :)

I also got a tasty RF turkey-bacon breakfast sandwich, sans cheese:

had a hankerin' for some turkey bacon!

It’s not that it was super-cold out today or anything (still in the mid-80’s) –I’d said I was waiting for colder weather to get a hot beverage–, but I’d just finished a tough test and needed a treat and some fuel to help propel me through my day.

And what a day it’s been!

I managed to take (AND PASS!!!) a proficiency later in the afternoon that I’d been sweating over for days, and when i got home I had to finish up a lab report that’s due in the morning.

And now, it’s back to this:

More studying. Joy!

Hope you’ve had a more eventful and dare I say, fun? Monday than I’ve had! Can’t wait for the year to be over already haha.

Question for you:

What have you been craving lately?

Weekend Roundup

18 Sep

Hi everyone! Hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend so far :)

I enjoyed being unplugged and off the radar for the last couple of days, spending time with friends and the Hubs.

I’ve got a big exam tomorrow morning (and a proficiency in the afternoon) so I’ll just give a little picture-recap of some of the things I ate/wore/did this weekend– then I have to get back to studying my booty off!

My amazing and lovely friend, Melinda, just completed her first ever HALF MARATHON this morning!!

She ROCKED it with a time of 2:21:00– SO amazing for her first time! I’m so so excited for and inspired by her! I can’t wait to one day run one of these babies by her side ;)

the lovely finisher and her supportive fiance :)

What I’m currently DOING:

while studying THIS

Whew!! That was kind of a huge picture dump :) Maybe I should get in an extra blog post on the weekends just so there’s less to show!

Anyway, hope you have a nice rest of your evening– I’m back to the grind :)

Question for you:

What did you do this weekend?

Slacker.

16 Sep

Hello everyone!! HAPPY FRIDAY!! Hope it’s been fun, fun, fun, fun so far (or will be getting there by tonight ;) )

I have a confession: I have been a huge slacker in the exercise department over the last week. You may have noticed that the only activity I wrote about on the blog was a nice long walk through the arboretum… ON SUNDAY. That’s 5 days ago. That has been IT!

There has been just one major reason for this– my exam schedule.

I have BIG exams (like, midterm exams) every Monday and Wednesday for the next 3 weeks, and this does not include the small quizzes and big proficiencies and homework and lab write-ups. I estimate that I spend about 30-35 hours a week AT my school in lab or clinic or class, and then I probably fit in 15-25 extra hours practicing for proficiencies, STUDYING for exams and quizzes, and doing homework.

Let me just tell you, that after a 5 hour night of sleep, a 5am wakeup call to finish studying, and 8am exam, an 8 hour (or more!) day at school afterwards, plus the need to study for the next thing…

… I DO NOT WANT TO WORK OUT.

I know, I know– I should, it will make me feel better, I will get more energy… I know all of the benefits. But just to spend an extra hour and a half (that I feel like I don’t have!) to change, exercise, and shower… it just feels really daunting at the end of the day.

However, for my mental and physical health, I really want to try to do a better job about getting in more movement. I’m not going to be too hard on myself for not getting a workout in every day– or even every other day when I’m in test mode– so what I know I can do is this:

always makes me feel better :)

I can work out each day of the weekend, plus most Friday evenings. If I can get just 3 long periods of movement in the week, even if they’re back-to-back, I will be less hard on myself and I’m sure I will feel better.

ANYWAY, on to some recent eats and outfits.

Eats:

black refried beans, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, salsa on ezekiel

.. topped with a big pile of ARUGULA!

iced coffee- fuel for my life.

rand-- pickles and popcorn for snack

build your own pizza on GLUTEN-FREE crust, toped with ricotta, olives, green peppers, artichoke hearts, tomato, basil, garlic and roasted red peppers.

^^ I’m about to have the other two pieces of this pizza for lunch today :)

Outfits:

Yesterday-

dressed for clinic. picked up the Hubs wearing this and he said I looked cute, but also like a middle-aged person (think it's the cardigan haha)

Today:

it was dark when I left this morning, sorry for the bad lighting!

I’ve got lots of school left today, plus a hopefully-crazy night out to celebrate my friend/classmate’s birthday :)

More to come later, plus probably some pictures of the shenanigans!

Question for you:

How do you fit exercise into your busy days?

Fashion Post- Riding Jacket

15 Sep

Hey people! Hope you’ve been having a lovely day so far!

I’ve been busy busy busy over here– running on iced coffee and very little sleep. I need to catch up from the last few nights of less than 5 hours a night (staying up late studying + waking up early to study)!

GUESS what the UPS guy dropped off LITERALLY as I was about to leave the house:

My new jacket!!!!

You’ll remember the stock photo:

Gibson Knit Riding Jacket

Uh huh. When I got to the door, I practically squealed in excitement :)

The interaction went like this-

UPS guy: Hey! I’m glad you’re here today.

(generally I’m not at home during the day to sign for things)

Me: YAY! ME TOO!! I’ve been so excited for this package!!

UPS guy: Ya, it’s from your favorite store!

Umm.

HOW DOES HE KNOW IT’S MY FAVORITE???

hahaha ^^ indication that MAYBE I do a little too much shopping at Nordstrom.

Anyway, since I was running late to class (but I couldn’t help myself), I ripped open the package, pulled out the jacket, and immediately slipped into it.

It went perfectly with what I was wearing and felt SO professional.

The Fit: totally true to my size. I got it in medium and it fits fabulously!

The Material: it’s sort of fuzzier and a little thicker than I expected looking at it online, but I sort of love it. Downside: it’s a little warmer than I was expecting, which means I won’t be comfortable wearing it for a few months.

The Cut: I love the 3/4 sleeves, and that it’s longer in the back than the front. The rouching on the sleeve is great, and I like that it has just one button. Keeps it from being too formal!

Can’t wait to wear it again, and to dress it down for a more casual outfit!!
